Control and the Future
Both pictures are of people removing garlic mustard from natural land. It is best to remove once it has flowered but has not created seeds.
What Next?
Ever since garlic mustard became widely known as an invasive species, people have been attempting to prevent its spread. Whether they did not want it on their farm or land, or were trying to protect a natural ecosystem, people all over have taken part in the prevention. Although there are methods for removing garlic mustard, the complete removal of it from a certain region is so difficult, it can take years to accomplish.
Garlic mustard is an extremely hardy and durable plant which makes it difficult to remove. It adapts to different environments within a few generations of being there, which in the long run is not much time. That means that people have to keep coming up with ways to prevent and remove garlic mustard from their land.
It is predicted that in the future, more ecosystems will be invaded, but the problem of garlic mustard will start its decline. Many ecosystems have been affected, and many more will, which means that species of plants will be driven out, and therefore species of animals will be forced to move. The future of many animal species will be put at risk because of the destruction of native plant life. Those animals that eat the native plants will be forced to find another area to live in, and the rest of the food chain will have to follow. That damage caused to one ecosystem can affect another because all of the pushed out animal species will overcrowd the next habitat they go to.
